Give a Book

Children need decent libraries. Sadly, some urban and rural school libraries don't have enough books, aren't properly staffed, or have been closed. A closed library is a thing of shame. We need to have our libraries overflowing with great books and staffed by loving professionals. We owe it to our children.

You can make a difference!!!

Contact your local school district or one of the wonderful organizations below and ask how you can help. Buy a NEW book for a library, or send a check. (Please - do not donate your old books - our kids deserve the very best.)

The Library Club at McClure Elementary

Laurie loves readers!

In honor of SPEAK's status as a National Book Award Finalist, Laurie threw a party for all her writer friends and neighbors. Instead of asking them to bring cheese dip, she asked them to bring books. By the end of the night, she had collected 92 new books and $200!

The books were donated to McClure Elementary School in Philadelphia. The parents and staff at McClure have been working very hard to refurbish their library. They weeded out some VERY outdated books, painted, built shelves, and turned it into a warm, comfortable place for kids. Now they are rebuilding the collection with new books for the 800 students in the school.

It was a real privilege to be able to donate books to these kids.

To donate books or money for books to the Philadelphia School District, contact Debra Lyman-Gniewek, Room 301, Administration Building, 21st Street South of the Parkway, Philadelphia, PA 19103, 215-299-7693, or e-mail: dgniewek@phila.k12.pa.us

A Note From Debra Gniewek

Our children desperately need to see themselves reflected in the pictures they view and the words they read. They need to see their own cultures celebrated before they can appreciate the cultures of others. That's why we would like to request that donated books be multi-cultural. Thank you for your support.

A Special Thanks to Philadelphia Inquirer columnist Lucia Herndon whose series of articles about the sorry state of libraries in the Philadelphia School District gave Laurie the idea for all this. Lucia rocks. A BIG hug to Laurie's husband Greg, for all of his behind the scenes work and photography. Thanks also to all of Laurie's wonderful, generous friends (you know who you are), and the great people at McClure: principal Alvira Dierkes, librarian Mitchell Will, and Debra Lyman-Gniewek, of the Library Programs & Services department of the Philadelphia School District. And thanks to
the students at McClure!!!
